BMW
R25/2
& Side Car
Excellent condition
This bike has been in my collection for about a decade and is only being sold now because I am moving further north and will not have the storage space for all of my bikes and parts.
This is an excellent bike and I would prefer to keep it, but how many sidecar bikes does a guy really need? (!!) I originally thought that I would sell the sidecar and keep the bike, but I will give someone the opportunity to buy this outfit first.
This bike starts on the first or second kick and idles nicely and very quietly with a very sweet note.
The bike does not leak any oil and is remarkably clean and tidy.
This BMW is in original condition, with a few small dings and marks in the paintwork, presumably from being stored in sheds for most of its life. The chrome is in excellent condition, showing the quality of materials used in those days.
It would be a perfect candidate for a full restoration, if that's what you are into, or with a little bit of work would make an ideal bike to ride every day. I personally like the fact that it is original and that it shows the fact that it is over fifty years old.
Even though this bike is fifty years old, all parts are still available for it, and can be obtained easily. I am an Australian dealer of classic BMW parts and accessories and will help you in any way that I can.
This vehicle is advertised elsewhere, and may be removed if the bike is sold.
Payment of a 25% deposit is to be made within 48hrs with the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction ending.
Feel free to email me with any questions etc.
BIKES HISTORY
This bike came to Australia in the 1960's with a German immigrant.
He had three bikes with him when he came over here. A beautiful NSU for himself, and two R25/2's for his teenage sons.
One of the sons rode his bike, once he was old enough to get a licence and loved it, but had to sell it in late 1970's to help him buy a house.
The other son loved bikes also and he fitted a sidecar to the bike, (he said it was great for picking up girls in those days!!) and resisted selling his R25 when he got married and bought a property, also in the late 1970's.
The terrain on the property where he lived apparently was rough and it was a bit far from town to ride it anywhere much. He did from time to time trailer it off to weddings and events, but basically it seemed to sit in the shed, under a tarp.
He was not involved in vintage bike clubs, which was a shame because this bike is an excellent club bike.
Eventually he inherited the NSU, which also sat under a tarp but got more use than this R25 /2, and after a few years he decided that he would sell the small outfit.
I was lucky to be 'in the right spot' at the right time and saw the small advert that he placed in his local newspaper.
I took this bike home to Canberra where I lived at that time, and put it on full ACT rego. Although the ACT has a very thorough inspection process for registration, it went straight through. It was a perfect bike for the Canberra roads.
I left Canberra after a few years and moved to the NSW south coast, where it was displayed in my private collection of 1950's and 1960's BMW's.
Due to lack of shed space and an electrical problem with the bike that I had trouble solving, I moved the R25/2 up to Don Wilson's for him to go over thoroughly. Some of you may have seen it there.
Don offered to help diagnose the problem in his spare time for me. During this time he removed the top end and checked the condition of the engine for me. He was impressed with the condition of the old engine and said that it showed no signs of wear. The only problem turned out to be the coil, which ceased to operate when the engine got hot (usually after about 20 kms). After three years (!!) I brought the bike home and fitted a new coil and it now runs perfectly. I put it on club plates, (not transferable) and I have used it locally to make sure that the problem was fixed (which it seems to be).
I will upload further information later, along with some photo's.
I am pleased to see that there is so much interest in this beautiful old bike.
I have to admit that I will be sorry to see it go, and would love to find away to keep it in the collection. THE SIDECAR
This beautiful sidecar is a S350 designed for small bikes such as this R25/2
It is a collectable item in its own right.
It is an excellent example of the early Globe sidecars, with a solid but light steel construction.
Although there is no date on the compliance plate, Its chassis number shows that it was only #758. I was told by the original owner that he purchased it new and had it imported.
It's delightful, long, slender, bullet shaped body suits this low BMW very well.
It has a boot compartment behind the seat that is easily opened by tilting the seat forward.
The seat is in excellent condition with the base seat being well sprung, and is easily removed for cleaning.
There is a foldable and adjustable head rest, which works very well, but it could do with being recovered at some time.
Padded arm rests, make for a very comfortable seating position.
The inside of the sidecar has ample leg room and is in great condition, and it still has the original matting in place.
The sidecar comes with a weather proof cover, protecting the interior of the outfit.
It is easily fitted, and can be folded back to allow a passenger to sit and still use it to cover their legs in the advent of rain or cold weather. It simply pulls back and clips over the rear of the seat once you disembark.
There is also an excellent screen that also clips off if it is not required.
The chair itself is well sprung and is a very comfortable ride.
Its condition is good, and my feeling is that it has not been used much. There are some paint scrapes on the mounts that show that it has probably been removed and readjusted a number of times.
I fitted this sidecar to the bike this morning, and it is tracking perfectly. I had forgotten how cute it was and how much fun it is to ride.
Once I fitted it, I took it down to the Dromedary Hotel at Central Tilba for lunch and a beer, and instantly regretted not taking my camera. As I sat on the verandah, there was a continual stream of onlookers surrounding the bike and taking photographs. I would have loved to photograph them all standing around looking and pointing their cameras at it.!! The tourists loved it, with a few people coming searching for me to ask questions and to find out about it.
Of course, once my dog ''Jenny' jumped in there was another flurry of shutter clicking, and she just sat there lapping up the attention. (she is a real tart when it comes to cameras!!!)
